Prognosis

Mesothelioma Prognosis

In mesothelioma, as in most cancers, early diagnosis and treatment offer the best hope for a favorable prognosis. The period between asbestos exposure and the onset of mesothelioma symptoms, however, can span decades, and the symptoms of mesothelioma are often similar to those of other diseases. As a result, arriving at a diagnosis of mesothelioma is often a challenge for the clinician. This asbestos-related cancer may be initially misdiagnosed.

Staging Helps Determine Mesothelioma Prognosis

Once a diagnosis of mesothelioma is confirmed, the doctor will use a variety of techniques to reveal the location and size of the tumor, as well as whether it has metastasized (or spread) to other organs or tissues. This process is called staging, and it is the chief factor in determining the mesothelioma patient's prognosis.

Imaging technologies such as chest x-ray and computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) scans allow the clinician to assign one of the following stages to the mesothelioma tumor. Patients with lower stage numbers generally face a better mesothelioma prognosis than those with higher stage numbers.

* Stage I - Mesothelioma is limited to one small, defined area of the chest or abdomen. Treatment of Stage I mesothelioma generally involves surgical removal of the tumor.

* Stage II - Mesothelioma has spread to other areas directly adjacent to the tumor, such as the lungs or the diaphragm.

* Stage III - Mesothelioma has spread not only to adjacent areas, but also to the lymph nodes in the region. At Stages II and III, treatment may include surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible, as well as radiation or chemotherapy to relieve symptoms. Patients with Stage II or Stage III mesothelioma may be candidates for clinical trials.

* Stage IV - Mesothelioma has spread to distant areas of the body (metastasized). Malignant mesothelioma most commonly spreads to the brain and areas of the lung removed from the tumor location. At Stage IV, mesothelioma has spread to other organs, and since a cure is not possible, the mesothelioma prognosis is poor. Treatment at this stage consists mainly of pain management and supportive care.

Other Factors in Mesothelioma Prognosis

While staging is a central factor in determining a patient's mesothelioma prognosis, other factors also affect outcome, including:

* The size of the tumor, and whether it can be removed by surgery
* The patient's age and general health
* The type of mesothelioma cells as seen under a microscope
* Whether the cancer is newly diagnosed or has recurred

Depending on the stage of the mesothelioma tumor and the evaluation of these other factors, the life expectancy for a patient with malignant mesothelioma is generally considered to be from 1 to 2 years following diagnosis.

Facts About Mesothelioma and Asbestos

* A history of asbestos exposure at work has been reported in approximately 70% to 80% of all mesothelioma cases.

* An estimated 27 million people may have been exposed to asbestos from 1940 to 1979.

* The average time from initial exposure to asbestos to diagnosis of mesothelioma is 30 to 50 years.mbestos from 1940 through 1979.

* Asbestos has not been in general use in manufacturing and construction since the late 1970s, but still exists in buildings and products in the United States.

* The amount of asbestos released around Manhattan following the bombing of the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001 is estimated at 1,000 tons.

Traditional Mesothelioma Treatments

Mesothelioma treatment options include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and clinical trials. The choice of treatment is determined by the patient's overall health and the stage and location of the cancer.

Surgery

A variety of surgical procedures may be performed to remove mesothelioma or to relieve its symptoms. Surgery, or surgery preceded by chemotherapy and radiation treatments, is the best hope for a cure in the early stages of mesothelioma.

Sometimes, however, it isn't possible to remove all of the cancer through this type of mesothelioma treatment. In those cases, surgery may help to reduce the signs and symptoms caused by the spread of mesothelioma. Surgical procedures can be useful in removing as much of the cancer as possible or removing other tissues around the lung or abdomen to provide relief. Surgeons may also insert a tube or catheter into the chest to drain fluid build-up and allow patients to breathe easier.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy treatment for mesothelioma involves the use of drugs to kill rapidly growing cancer cells. Doctors usually administer chemotherapy systemically, meaning the drugs travel throughout the body, searching for target cancer cells. In abdominal mesothelioma, chemotherapy drugs may be injected directly into the abdominal cavity, where they can attack the mesothelioma cells directly, without harming healthy cells throughout the body. This type of mesothelioma treatment may slow the growth of the cancer. Additionally, it can be used before or after surgery to reduce the signs and symptoms of mesothelioma.

Radiation

Radiation therapy is a mesothelioma treatment that may be administered alone or in combination with chemotherapy and/or surgery. Radiation can help to reduce the signs and symptoms of mesothelioma, and it may be used following surgery to prevent mesothelioma from spreading. Because of vital organs that reside in the chest cavity, radiologists must be careful to limit exposure of surrounding tissues and organs while administering doses of radiation strong enough to kill the target mesothelioma cells.

Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are research studies conducted in an effort to develop new mesothelioma treatment methods. Patients with mesothelioma may be motivated to participate in a clinical trial in the hope of finding a cure. Mesothelioma clinical trials are not a guarantee for a cure, but patients may find support for their illness. Additionally, participation in a clinical trial may help doctors discover better mesothelioma treatment options.

Advanced Cases

As with other cancers, early detection of mesothelioma can improve the patient's outlook for recovery. Conversely, delays in diagnosis and mesothelioma treatment may result in a less hopeful prognosis. Unfortunately, because mesothelioma is often aggressive and may be undetected until an advanced stage, in some cases a cure is not possible. In such instances, mesothelioma treatment will focus on pain relievers, oxygen and other remedies to reduce symptoms and make the patient comfortable.

Choosing the Best Mesothelioma Treatment Options

Patients who have mesothelioma may wish to take an active part in their treatment planning. This includes discussing their treatment goals and options with their doctor. Exploring all paths of mesothelioma treatment can help patients make choices that are right for them.

Types of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma Types

There are four types of malignant mesothelioma, each based on the tumor's location in the body.

Pleural Mesothelioma
Pleural mesothelioma may be found on the chest wall, on the lung surface, or on the diaphragm. It is the most common type of malignant mesothelioma, accounting for approximately 75% of all mesothelioma cases. Because its symptoms are common to other diseases affecting the lungs, pleural mesothelioma may be misdiagnosed. The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include chronic chest pain, shortness of breath, chronic coughing, weight loss and fever.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining of the abdomen, known as the peritoneum. This type of mesothelioma occurs when inhaled asbestos fibers become lodged in the membranes of the mouth and esophagus, eventually traveling through the digestive tract, where tumors are formed. The symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma, which accounts for 10% to 20% of mesothelioma cases, include abdominal mass or swelling, abdominal pain, weight loss, anemia, fever, bowel obstruction and blood clotting problems.

Pericardial Mesothelioma
Pericardial mesothelioma accounts for less than 10% of all documented cases of mesothelioma. Because it affects the lining of the heart, also known as the pericardium, this is sometimes considered to be the most dangerous type of mesothelioma. The symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma include chest pain, abnormal breathing, chronic coughing, and irregular heartbeat.

Testicular Mesothelioma
Testicular mesothelioma occurs as a thickening of the ducts and glands in the testes. While it is the rarest type of mesothelioma, testicular mesothelioma is the second most common form of testicular cancer.

Mesothelioma Subtypes
Each of the four main types of mesothelioma is further grouped into three subtypes, based on the appearance of the mesothelioma cells under a microscope. These include epithelioid mesothelioma, sarcomatoid mesothelioma and mixed mesothelioma.

* Epithelioid mesothelioma
accounts for 50% to 70% of all mesothelioma cases. Due to its slower growth and greater responsiveness to treatment, epithelioid mesothelioma has the best prognosis of the three subtypes of the disease.

* Sarcomatoid mesothelioma
accounts for 10% to 15% of all cases. Sarcomatoid mesothelioma is a more aggressive form of mesothelioma and has a poorer prognosis than the other two subtypes.

* Mixed mesothelioma
accounts for 10% to 15% of cases. Mixed mesothelioma has characteristics of both epithelioid-type and sarcomatoid-type mesothelioma, with survival rates lower than those of epithelioid mesothelioma.

Atlanta Mesothelioma Injuries

Bodily injury usually occurs when a person suffers an injury, whether physical or psychological, as a result of an accident or medical negligence.

Some of the most common types of personal injury claims are accidents, traffic accidents, defective products claims, attacks and injuries and accidents on holiday. There are hundreds of different types of accidents and injuries, the term also covers medical and dental injuries (many medical and dental claims violations per year) and conditions that are often referred to as cases of occupational diseases. Occupational disease cases, asbestosis and mesothelioma, lung diseases (such as emphysema, pneumoconiosis, silicosis, chronic bronchitis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), vibration white finger, occupational deafness, stress, contact dermatitis, and cases of RSI.

Accidents due to the fault of another person, the injured party may be entitled to monetary compensation from the person whose negligence led to the injury. At least in the United States, the system is complex and controversial, with critics calling the various forms of tort law reform. Lawyers are often clients in the "manner" in which the lawyer is not for services until the case is resolved.

Structured settlements in case of injury

Often, the use of a structured system, at the request of the victim to protect financial injury after injury settlement.

Structured settlements injured victims and tax benefits of adequate financial planning for future needs of the victims injured as a result of trauma.

What to do before You Have Breast Cancer Symptoms

Breast cancer is a major health concern and you need to know if you have breast cancer symptoms or signs. Women including men have breast cancer as I wrote in my last newsletter. According to the recent survey worldwide, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer after lung cancer and the fifth most common cause of cancer death in the world.
Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer among women. The number of cases worldwide has significantly increased since the 1970s, a phenomenon partly blamed on the way that we eat and the pollution that exists in the water, air, and food.

The other big factor in cancer is the thoughts that we have. Toxins and chemical pollution cause acid and free radicals in our body and so do negative thoughts. It is these acids and free radicals that change your body’s pH and that depletes the oxygen in your cells allowing cancer to form freely and to multiple.

To protect yourself against cancer, you need to know the signs of breast cancer so you can take action against it right away and to learn good nutritional habits.
Due to the high incidence of breast cancer among older women, screening is now recommended in many countries. Recommended screening methods include breast self-examination and mammogram. This test has been estimated to reduce breast cancer-related mortality by 20-30%. Routine and annual mammography of women older than age 40 or 50 is recommended.
Mammograms do not detect all possible cancer tissue. They can detect micro calcification of calcium, which might indicate the presents of cancer. Calcium can deposit in tissue and this is caused by an acid body. To stay in solution, calcium must have enough sodium in the surrounding liquid. In an alkaline body, there is plenty of sodium to keep calcium in solution, but in an acid body, calcium will precipate out and form crystals.

Early signs and symptoms of breast cancer are usually not painful. This may be the reason why most women don’t know they have breast cancer until after several breast cancer signs and symptoms start to appear. You should see your health care provider, if you notice the following:

· Lump in the armpit or above the collarbone that does not go away in two weeks or so. Although most breast lumps are not cancerous, it always best to check them out

· Breast discharge is a common problem and is rarely a symptom of cancer, but if it is from only one breast or if it is bloody, then check with your doctor

· Nipple inversion is a common in normal nipples, but nipple inversion that has developed recently can be of concern

· Changes in the breast skin including redness, changes in texture, and puckering. These changes are usually caused by skin diseases but occasionally can be associated with breast cancer.

Breast cancer is a condition where you lack oxygen in your cells and when you have an acid body. To prevent cancer from forming, you need to learn how to make your body more alkaline. In my new nutrition course, I concentrate on how you can make your body more alkaline. An alkaline body not only stops cancer but also stops and prevents most diseases from forming in your body.
Don’t wait until you have symptoms of breast cancer or any other disease before you start improving your health habits. Start now learning what good nutrition is and how you can be free from illness.

Legal Rights in Mesothelioma

Every year thousands of people are diagnosed with fatal diseases and thousands of individuals die of these fatal diseases due to the criminal negligence of asbestos manufacturers for which the asbestos related disease like mesothelioma cancer, asbestosis etc. develop in workers of factories where asbestos is used for and many consumers of asbestos. Asbestos related diseases can occur in workers of factories where asbestos is manufactured or asbestos is used for production of some other products. Asbestos relateddiseases can also occur in consumers who use products that contain asbestos.

Asbestos related diseases, especially mesothelioma ia a unique disease and due to the uniqueness of the mesothelioma cancer the law that govern the compensation of mesothelioma are also different from other medical compensation claims. Mesothelioma cancer is unique because of the exclusive nature of the disease. Mesothelioma is almost exclusively caused by exposure to asbestos and at present no other causative agent of mesothelioma is known to medical science. Mesothelioma can be attributed to thenegligence of companies that manufacture asbestos-containing products. The companies (which manufacture asbestos) know about the health risks of asbestos exposure like mesothelioma and asbestosis, but if they do not to tell employees or leak this information to the general public it can benegligence on the part of company. Asbestos manufacturing companies knew about the risk of development of mesothelioma due to exposure to asbestos since 1920s.

If anyone of your near and dear is diagnosed with mesothelioma, you have legal right and option to claim for compensation. There are thousands of mesothelioma litigations every year which are being settled in favor of the victim of mesothelioma for covering the medical expense and also for lost income. So if you are diagnosedwith mesothelioma, it is prudent to claim your legal rights for rightful compensation.

Products That Contain AsbestosProducts That Contain Asbestos

Asbestos is the only known cause of mesothelioma, so it is important to know the products that contain asbestos and we use it commonly. There are many products which we use in our daily life, which may contain asbestos and can make us victim of mesothelioma (as mesothelioma can occur if exposed to it only few time in small quantities, although the risk is proportional to the degree of exposure and duration of exposure to asbestos). To avoid getting exposure to asbestos and the risk of developing mesothelioma, it is very important to know which products contain asbestos that we are using regularly and which are part of our routine life.

The following are some of the commonly used products and items that may contain asbestos in them and we should be careful while using these items:

  1. boiler insulations, brake linings
  2. cables and wires, ceramic tiles, ceiling tiles, cement, cement (insulating), cement (refractory), some types of clay, some types of cloths, clutches
  3. emulsions
  4. floor tiles, fireproofing sprays
  5. gaskets of different items, gloves (hand)
  6. joint compounds
  7. mastic adhesives, millboard
  8. packing materials, paints, paper, paper tapes, pipe insulation preformed pipe wrap, plaster acoustical, putty (wall)
  9. roofing papers, roofing felts, roll board
  10. spackle.
The above are some of the examples of items that may contain asbestos in them. There are many more items which may contain asbestos in them that are not included here. Exposure to any of the list above

How is the Prognosis of Mesothelioma?

In the United States more than 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed every year and most of the cases are due to exposure to asbestos due to presence of asbestos in the work place of some indirect exposure to asbestos. It is only natural for the patient to know about the possible prognosis of the disease he/she has developed. The disease may be mild simple viral fever or a cancer like mesothelioma. Even it becomes a duty of the doctor diagnosing the mesothelioma or treating the disease to discuss the possibleprognosis of mesothelioma or any other disease and also the probable influence mesothelioma will have on the normal functioning of the patient of mesothelioma.

The factors which may influence the prognosis of mesothelioma are many. The most important factor that influence the prognosis of mesothelioma is detection time, the earlier it is diagnosed the better is the prognosis; unfortunately most of the mesotheliomas are diagnosed when they are in late stage. The time taken by the mesothelioma cancer to become symptomatic is generally long, which is the reason of late stage diagnosis. Another reason for late diagnosis is the less serious symptoms mesothelioma produce and due to the less serious symptoms they may be taken as less serious problem. Due to the diagnosis of mesothelioma in the late stage of disease theprognosis of the disease is generally poor.

Another factor that has influence on the prognosis of mesothelioma is the type of mesothelioma. Generally mesotheliomas are pleural mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma and testicular mesothelioma. Different type of mesothelioma have differentprognosis, although in general they don’t differ much.

Other factors that may influence the prognosis of mesothelioma are smoking (if the mesothelioma patient is a smoker he/she will succumb to the disease earlier than a non smoker), size of the mesothelioma tumor (the bigger the tumor size the worst is the prognosis), the severity of the associated symptoms (like presence of fluid in lungs as in pleural mesothelioma or abdomen as in peritoneal mesothelioma), and the location of tumor (which can determine if the tumor can be removed surgically, which if possible can give much better prognosis that tumor that can not be removed surgically).

An Insight Into Mesothelioma Cure

The doctors and researchers are looking for answers related to Mesothelioma cure but have not found any. Before we discuss about mesothelioma cure, it is necessary to know about what is mesothelioma and what are its possible causes. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer of the lining of the lungs and abdomen. High Asbestos exposure is the only known cause of mesothelioma cancers. Asbestos is a natural fibrous mineral that was widely used in the construction process, building material and many manufacturing units. Asbestos breaks into minute particles that float into the air, can be easily inhaled and settle on the clothes of workmen, leaving them and their family members prone to many health hazards.

Understanding Its Symptoms – A Step towards Mesothelioma Cure:

An understanding of mesothelioma symptoms can help in the process of mesothelioma cure. Some common symptoms of mesothelioma are difficulty in breathing, chest pain, and chronic cough. However, many times this disease lies in asymptomatic in the body, which makes mesothelioma cure an impossible task. Once detected, the chances of survival of an average mesothelioma patient are very bleak.

The options for Mesothelioma cure depend upon the different stages of the disease. In the first stage the treatments options depends on factors such as patient’s age, general health, organ affected and the size of tumor. Surgery is used for mesothelioma treatment and cure in the first stage. The doctors remove the tumor and the nearby tissues with a surgical process. However, the doctors use a combination of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy if the tumor has witnessed enormous growth.

Fluid collection in the chest and abdomen takes place in the advance stages of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma cure in these stages involves draining of the fluid to reduce discomfort. This process of treatment is known as Thorancentesis or Paracentesis. After this, the doctors use Surgery followed by radiation and chemotherapy. Treatment and efforts for mesothelioma cure can suffer a severe jolt if the disease strikes back. In that case, the treatment depends on the location of recurrence, and the patient’s medical history.

What If the Efforts For Mesothelioma Cure Fail?

As we have discussed the survival chances of mesothelioma patients are bleak and the possibility of mesothelioma cure are rare. In that case it is necessary to make the patients aware that they are legally entitled to claim compensation for the medical expenses, loss of income, lost earning capacity, pain and the mental trauma they are undergoing. Though the award of compensation cannot bring about mesothelioma cure or compensate for the loss of life, yet it can provide some relief to the mesothelioma victims and their family members.

Early Signs of Mesothelioma

The early signs and symptoms of mesothelioma are quite similar to pneumonia. They won’t be very apparent until one gets exposed to asbestos ranging from 20-50 years of vigorous contact with it. The early ciphers of mesothelioma are:

  • Chest Pain (Right, Left or even in sides)
  • Sudden Loss of Weight
  • Nausea
  • Pain and Swelling in abdomen
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Sudden rise in temperature
  • Swelling of face, neck or chest.
  • Pain in Chest
  • Persistent Cough

Since, this cancer is caused due to the Chest cavity and the abdominal cavity, so the above mentioned symptoms are the most common ones in this disease.

Because the chest cavity and abdominal cavity are the primary sites of origin for this form of cancer, most patients who are later diagnosed with mesothelioma have the following signs and symptoms:

Generally, there are two types of Mesothelioma- Pleural and Peritoneal Mesothelioma.

Pleural (Chest) Mesothelioma: Patients suffering from pleural mesothelioma generally experience breathing problems and/or pain in chest or backs. In this form of mesothelioma, thickening of Lung’s membrane takes place which interrupts in the general expansion and contraction of the lungs. The presence of Pleural effusions (the fluid build ups) makes the breathing difficult for the patients.

Peritoneal (Abdominal) Mesothelioma: Patients suffering from peritoneal mesothelioma generally experience pain in abdomens and/or swelling in face/chest or backs. Similar to Pleural Mesothelioma, thickening of the membrane also takes place here, while the fluid gets accumulated in the abdomen.

Anyone with a history of asbestos exposure is strongly recommended to get qualified medical treatment and check up immediately, if they experience any of the symptoms mentioned above. God Bless.

Causes of Mesothelioma

The main cause that can generally cause Mesothelioma is Asbestosis, which are fibers ranging from 50 microns or more in length and less than 0.5 microns in its width. The inhalation of such fibers generally results in Asbestosis.

The airflow supports its movement which makes its move in a longitudinal direction in the air. The asbestosis can penetrate respiratory walls as well.

Main Sources of Asbestos: The following are the main sources that can cause the asbestosis:

  • ·Mining of Asbestos
  • Asbestos Milling
  • Construction Factory
  • Textile Industries
  • Fire Proofing Industries
  • Paint Industry
  • Plastic Industry
  • Hardwares for Automobiles Industry (Brakes and Clutch)

Asbestosis is generally not confined to the people working in such industries. Their families are equally prone to this disease as well since they get exposed up to the fibrous dust coming out of the person’s clothing’s working in such factories.

The asbestos related diseases can develop in any general public if they are exposed to fibrous dust or wastes coming across from asbestos plants in the proximity of their residence. Typical residents exposure to such types of fibers is quite low, though and generally don’t relate to any diseases associated with asbestos.

Once the Asbestos fibers get inside their body, they get trapped in the form of brown colored scabbard, having rich density of iron, the asbestos bodies, which are generally found in the tissues of sputum and lungs. Then this leads to the formation of interstitial fibrosis in the lower zone of lungs sourcing to massive demolishing changes in pleurae and lung parenchyma.

Always keep yourself safe by learning how you can evade such diseases cropping up from asbestosis. Keep alert, keep fit and stay healthy. God Bless.

An Overview Of Asbestos Disease- Mesothelioma

What Is Asbestos?

Asbestos disease, mesothelioma cancers, lung cancers and asbestosis are the diseases caused because of asbestos exposure. Asbestos constitutes different naturally occurring fibrous minerals in some rocks and soil. It has found widespread use in industries and building materials such as fireproofing, roofing shingles, electric insulation, furnace, hot pipe covering, and friction products.

Recent studies have, however, revealed that exposure to asbestos can have damaging health implication resulting in asbestos disease and mesothelioma for both workers in industries making use of asbestos as well as those who live in the environment surrounding such places. Workers may inhale fine asbestos particles in the air; they also become exposed through skin contact with asbestos or by swallowing asbestos fibers while at work. These workers are vulnerable to asbestos diseases as mesothelioma and asbestosis.

Serious Effects Of Asbestos Disease- Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is the most serious of several asbestos-related diseases detected so far. This is because of the carcinogenic effect of asbestos particles. Asbestos can cause cancer of the lungs, esophagus, colon, rectum, stomach, vocal chords, and kidneys. About 70 percent to 80 percent of all cases of asbestos disease mesothelioma - a rare type of cancer of the mesothelium, the membrane that covers and protects most of the body internal organs – are the result of asbestos exposure at work.

Asbestos disease mesothelioma may not immediately manifest. The asbestos particles can lie dormant in the body for several years and manifest later, when the prognosis is very grim. It is possible that by the time the disease is diagnosed, the cancer may have already spread significantly. In view of health concerns all new uses of asbestos in the manufacturing industries have been banned in the United States from July 1989 onward. In particular, the use of asbestos in hand-held hair dryers was voluntarily stopped in 1979. Schools are required to test for use of asbestos roofing and it is removed or covered up.

Compensation To Victims Of Asbestos Disease Mesothelioma

The first case of asbestos disease mesothelioma was filed nearly 70 years ago. Employees in industries with considerable risk of asbestos poisoning are, in principle, eligible for mesothelioma compensation. The compensation is available only for those employees who run the risk of asbestos exposure since the 1940s. Recently, many mesothelioma patients have filed lawsuits for compensation. They have been awarded compensation on the ground that the owners of industries continued to use asbestos despite the information of the health hazards it entails. Currently, help is available to victims of asbestos disease mesothelioma through many specialized legal firms in the United States.
